After dealing with my alcoholism in our marriage since the beginning (April 1990), Chuck was ready for me to get help. I had been to so many treatment centers and other types of group meetings, but to no avail. He had seen an announcement in a Lakewood Church bulletin for Christ-centered 12 step meetings under Cool Ministries, Inc., so after I got out of another detox center, we went to a Cool meeting at Gulf Meadows Church in S.E. Houston. As we tried to slip in unnoticed, Pastor Boyd Harrell turned around in his chair and said, “Hello family!!”. Those two words were a ‘life changer’ for Chuck & I. We found out that not only did Cool Ministries have 12-step meetings, but that he and his wife Jan were ordained pastors and held regular church services twice a week.Chuck & Karen,
As I said earlier, “Chuck was ready for me to get help”. I apparently was not quite ready because after I was off of the alcohol, I started taking sleeping pills and thought I was not hurting anything since that was not my ‘drug of choice’. After years of hiding the pills and consequently many visits to the ER, I ended up in the ER at S.W. Memorial very close to death. Chuck was tired of dealing with the alcohol and drugs after 23 years of marriage, so he changed the locks! Then Pastor Boyd found a facility for me. He mentored and encouraged me, applying tough-love when required and showed me how to develop a real relationship with God and was a spiritual life-line to Chuck during all of it.
I have now been clean for 2 yrs. and almost 4 mos. Certainly it was my Heavenly Father that helped me through, but Pastors Boyd & Jan were instrumental.
Chuck & I are involved in several ministry functions at Cool and even though Chuck has no felony or substance history, he feels as connected to Cool as I do. To quote Pastor Boyd: “Everyone is recovering from something.”
Thank you, Pastors Boyd & Jan and our Cool family for all the love, faithfulness and hard work in helping so many through the years!
